You’ve probably heard the news about the United Way’s funding shortfall this year and that many Twin Cities nonprofits will be impacted. Sadly, the Annex Teen Clinic is one of the nonprofits that will lose all United Way funding (currently $60,000) effective July 1.
The Annex has been proud to be a United Way funded agency for the past three decades. We’ve been very appreciative of the support of United Way staff and the thousands of donors who have made our programming possible.
For over 30 years, United Way funded our sexuality education programming. When they discontinued their support of adolescent pregnancy prevention programming several years ago, we were grateful they wanted to continue their partnership with the Annex by supporting our after-school groups. These groups provide a wonderful setting for young people to establish meaningful relationships with their peers, engage in conversations and learning about topics of their choosing and develop some leadership skills that are a critical component to health youth development.
We’ve made a commitment to be very deliberate about working in authentic partnerships with the young people we serve, and we engage them in learning how our programs and services can truly meet young people’s needs. These after school groups that United Way funded, including our Annex Advisory Council, have played a powerful role in helping us learn how to engage young people in improving the quality of the work we do.
We know these cuts aren’t related to performance, and we are determined to find a way to continue this vital programming. One of the lessons from United Way’s recent funding challenges is that individual donors are increasingly wanting to designate their charitable contributions to organizations whose mission aligns with their values. We know that many people share a commitment to the Annex Teen Clinic’s mission, but it can hard for a small organization like us to compete for donations with larger nonprofits who have more name recognition. The Annex’s Board of Directors recognizes the huge potential to grow our individual donor base and is investing time and resources to accomplish that. If you are reading this, there is a strong likelihood you already support the Annex Teen Clinic. Thank you! To help us thrive in this new age of charitable giving, I hope you will help us connect to your friends and colleagues who also share a commitment to helping young people take charge of their sexual health.
The Annex knows what young people need to make smart decisions about their sexual health. We are proud to provide comprehensive sexuality education and clinical services, youth development opportunities, and connections to caring adults. We are in this for the long haul and will continue to provide these critical services to adolescents. We hope you’ll join us by pledging your commitment to our 4 the Annex campaign. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me. Thank you for your support of healthy young people!
