Mission: The Annex Teen Clinic helps young people take charge of their sexual health by providing confidential health services and education.
Vision: The Annex will be a catalyst for creating a community where all young people have the resources and support they need to successfully make the transition from adolescence to adulthood.
History: Located in Robbinsdale, the Annex Teen Clinic was founded in 1971 through the joint efforts of Holy Nativity Lutheran Church and St. Raphael’s Roman Catholic Church as the “teen annex” of the church. Our founding was in response to the concerns of young people about a lack of access to quality sexual health services, especially STI testing and treatment. In later years, the Annex became an independent, nonprofit agency, and services were expanded to include more comprehensive sexuality-related health services. Our founding coincided with the passage of Minor’s Consent Legislation in Minnesota in 1971, which guaranteed young people the right to access sexual health services confidentially and independently.
The Annex, and thousands of clinics like ours stretching across the United States, brought neighbors, public health advocates, community organizers, and healthcare practitioners together with a simple goal: to put community first. Today, the Annex has grown from a small, volunteer-based clinic to an organization that provides comprehensive sexual healthcare and education to thousands of young people throughout Northwest Hennepin County and North Minneapolis each year. All services are confidential, low or no cost, fact-based, non-judgmental, and inclusive. True to our founding principles, young people continue to lead and shape our programs and services through multiple Youth Leadership and Advisory Councils as we strive to help young people take charge of their sexual health.
