Do you think you might be pregnant? We can do a pregnancy test 12-14 days after you had unprotected sex (it must be at least 12 days for us to get accurate results) or if your period is 1 week late.
What’s it like to get a pregnancy test?
We run pregnancy tests by having you pee in a cup (just a few drops is all we need) and using a test that looks for hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin – the hormone that your body makes when a fertilized egg attaches to the uterine wall).
After you pee in the cup, it takes 3 minutes for the test to run. Before or during this time, a nurse will ask you questions about when your last period was, if you are having symptoms, etc. Once the test is done, the nurse gives you the results privately.
What if I’m pregnant?
If you are pregnant we review all options – parenting, adoption, and abortion. We try to figure out how far along you are based on when your last period was and we may refer you to various resources depending on your wants and needs.
What if I’m not pregnant?
If your pregnancy test is negative and you are not wanting to be pregnant, we will talk with you about birth control. If you are already on birth control but have been missing it, we can talk about other methods that may be easier for you. If you are not on birth control, we’ll talk about the different methods and possibly have you see a provider so you can start on one if you want.
If you are trying to get pregnant, we might talk about the menstrual cycle and when a good time to get pregnant might be based on your periods. However, we are not a fertility clinic so we might recommend that you see a reproductive specialist.
