What is PrEP?

PrEP is a daily pill called Truvada that can be taken to prevent HIV infection. When taken as prescribed, it can reduce someone’s risk of HIV infection by 92%. Pre Exposure Prophylactic does not protect against pregnancy or other sexually transmitted infections.

How does it work?

It prevents HIV from reproducing in the body. It is only for people who are HIV negative and who have a high risk for HIV infection.

Who can take PrEP?

Taking this pill daily could be right for someone who is HIV- and:

  • Has a HIV+ partner
  • Doesn’t always use condoms during anal and/or vaginal sex
  • Exchanges sex for money, shelter, or other goods
  • Shares needles
  • Has recently participated in a drug treatment program
  • Lives in an area or network with a high rate of HIV infection
