From Questions to Confidence: How One Teen Became a Nurse
When Elle* was fourteen, the thought of starting birth control made her anxious. She had heard from friends that it was the right choice, but she was left with a host of questions: Where could she get it? How much would it cost? What would it do to her body? Unfortunately, her school sex education class didn’t provide any answers, only the knowledge that birth control was for those who didn’t want to get pregnant. Feeling uncomfortable and unprepared to discuss her concerns openly with her parents or family doctor, Elle found herself in a state of uncertainty and isolation.
But then, a friend suggested the Annex Teen Clinic. Elle had never heard of it, but her friend guided her through making an appointment. The next day, despite her nerves, she walked through the clinic’s doors, expecting a cold, clinical environment. Instead, she was greeted by music, colorful posters, and a friendly face at the front desk.
In her appointment, Elle met with a nurse in a cozy office where she felt safe to voice her concerns and burning questions about birth control. The nurse offered her honest, comprehensive, and non-judgmental answers, and Elle suddenly felt supported in her body and her choices in a way she had never felt before. Reflecting on that day years later, she said, “I am forever grateful there was a place that wanted to answer my questions and empower me to make my own decisions. You will never find a group of people who are more caring and kind and welcoming.”

Over the years, Elle continued to visit the Annex for her birth control needs, attending regular check-ups to ensure everything was on track. Inspired by her positive experiences, she decided to give back to the community that had invested in her. Elle became an Annex volunteer: preparing outreach materials in the Teen Room, sharing informational brochures at her school, and assisting nurses during outreach events.
Today, more than a decade after she scheduled her first appointment, Elle is a nurse herself, specializing in pediatrics. Now she emphasizes the importance of uplifting her community, echoing the support she once received: “Every day I strive to empower my patients and their families to make decisions that are best for them, all while providing unbiased education. Just like the Annex did for me.”
Elle’s journey is a beautiful reminder of how important it is to have supportive spaces for young people to navigate their sexual health on their terms. The Annex Teen Clinic not only helped her find the answers she needed but also inspired her to help others in their journeys. By fostering an environment of understanding, knowledge, and compassion, the Annex plays a crucial role in enabling the next generation to take charge of their health and well-being.
